Gratiot / 7 Mile

The Gratiot / 7 Mile neighborhood, nicknamed the G7, features a dense, historic neighborhood on the move, anchored by institutions that have served this community for decades.

One of Detroit's most legendary steakhouses has called this block home since 1982: Capers Steakhouse on Gratiot Avenue, where you order your steak by the ounce and the line runs out the door, has been a neighborhood institution for over 40 years.
The G7 Activation turned three lots into a living community hub, and it stuck: What started as a temporary community project on Gratiot near McNichols became a permanent community gathering space, and residents have since celebrated its place in the neighborhood.
A $12.5 million safe streets grant is transforming the entire Gratiot corridor: Stretching from 8 Mile Road all the way to downtown Detroit, this initiative is slowing traffic, improving crossings, and making the corridor safer and more connected for residents and visitors.

Housing

Gratiot / 7 Mile offers classic northeast Detroit housing stock, including brick bungalows, Cape Cods, and two-flats built from the 1920s through the 1950s for the auto workers, tradespeople, and small business owners who made this corridor hum. Strategic investments, including the renovation of duplexes on Mapleridge Street and facade grants along the corridor, are strengthening the residential fabric one block at a time.

Community

The G7 area features active block clubs, the Denby Neighborhood Alliance, and the Osborn Neighborhood Alliance, which runs a tech hub and workforce development opportunities. The G7 Activation community gathering space on Gratiot near McNichols stands as the physical symbol of years of resident-led work meeting city investment.

History

Gratiot Avenue is one of Detroit's oldest roads, established as a trade route by French-Canadian settlers and named for Charles Gratiot, a French-Canadian fur trader and U.S. Army officer. This history makes the corridor one of the literal foundations of Detroit's original street grid. The neighborhoods boomed in the mid-century as a thriving Italian, Polish, and Black working-class community with a self-contained commercial ecosystem. As Detroit's economy changed in the 1970s and 1980s, the corridor evolved alongside it. Today, continued investment is building on the neighborhood's long history as one of northeast Detroit's most important commercial corridors.
