Cultural Center Historic District (Midtown)

The Cultural Center Historic District is a walkable, and culturally layered neighborhood: home to 12 world-class museums, a James Beard–recognized dining corridor, a Motown legacy, and a vibrant community of artists, students, chefs, and longtime residents.

More museums per square mile than almost anywhere in America: Within a ten-minute walk, you will find the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Historical Museum, the Michigan Science Center, and Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD).
Detroit's innovation district: Midtown is home to Wayne State University, the Detroit Medical Center, Henry Ford Health, the College for Creative Studies, and dozens of startups and research institutions, making it one of the Midwest's leading centers for education, healthcare, and innovation.
Detroit's most celebrated restaurant corridor: Selden Standard, SheWolf, Chartreuse, and Mad Nice have turned the stretch of Second Avenue, Selden Street, and Canfield into a premier dining destination that draws reservations from across the region. Locals will tell you a Tuesday night table, when the kitchens are cooking at their own focused pace, is the best-kept secret in the city.

The organization leads free events like Monday evening yoga at Pallister Park, community composting workshops, Earth Day garden parties, and lively street festivals. History

The neighborhood's roots trace back to the "City Beautiful" movement of the early 1900s when Detroit commissioned Edward Bennett, the planner behind the famous Plan of Chicago, to design a grand civic center that would center art and public knowledge along Woodward Avenue. Alongside its architectural triumphs, Midtown has a deep healthcare history. Detroit's very first hospital opened here in 1863 to treat Civil War soldiers. Today, the 5-million-square-foot Detroit Medical Center (DMC) stands as one of the country's premier medical complexes, blending world-class medicine with world-class art on the same blocks.
