Bagley

Bagley is defined by historic homes, a celebrated musical legacy, and a strong neighborhood identity, making it one of Northwest Detroit's most established places to call home. The neighborhood is a large and dense residential community bordered within Outer Drive, Wyoming, McNichols (6 Mile), and Livernois. Livernois is home to a historic and vibrant commercial corridor named the Avenue of Fashion.

A soundtrack that shaped Detroit: Motown lived here, Stevie Wonder grew up on Greenlawn, and Marvin Gaye conceived What's Going On on Outer Drive, meaning Bagley's streets are deeply tied to musical legends.
Built to last: Bagley's Tudor Revival, Colonial, and English Cottage homes have stood the test of time, with many still featuring original hardwood floors and historic Pewabic tile fireplaces.
A neighborhood on the move: With the Live6 corridor humming along McNichols and the Livernois Avenue of Fashion serving as its eastern edge, Bagley is adding new restaurants, coffee shops, and community spaces while keeping its identity completely intact.

Housing

Bagley's housing is defined by block after block of brick Tudors, Colonials, and English cottages built in the 1920s and 1930s. Many still showcase original hardwood floors, Pewabic tile fireplaces, vintage tile bathrooms, and detailed plasterwork. For homebuyers looking for quality craftsmanship and distinctive architecture, Bagley offers something increasingly hard to find.

Community

Community has long been at the heart of Bagley. The Bagley Community Council meets monthly, the Bagley Neighborhood Association hosts frequent resident gatherings, block clubs stay connected year-round, and organizations like the Live6 Alliance bring residents together through local events, neighborhood initiatives, and support for small businesses. That involvement continues to shape a neighborhood where people know their neighbors and take pride in where they live.

History

Bagley's history is beautifully layered. The neighborhood developed in the 1920s, shifted from a Jewish enclave in the 1940s to a proudly Black neighborhood by the 1960s, and became home to some of the city's most recognizable cultural names. Stevie Wonder grew up here, Marvin Gaye wrote What's Going On from his Outer Drive house (now Marvin Gaye Drive), and Big Sean came up on Northlawn. That is not just trivia: it is the neighborhood's actual DNA.
