Southwest Detroit
Southwest Detroit is one of the city's most flavorful, colorful, and culturally rooted neighborhoods. It stands as a 100-year-old Latino community where the tamales are made from scratch and the murals draw visitors year-round.
The most authentic Mexican food corridor in the Midwest: Over 1,500 family-owned small businesses operate within a three-mile radius here. These range from third-generation bakeries and carnicerias to sit-down restaurants where the recipes trace directly back to Jalisco, Michoacán, and Oaxaca, Mexico.
The murals serve as the architecture: Dozens of large-scale murals line Bagley and Vernor, with some dating back to 1979. Created by community artists, they serve as a vital medium for Latino cultural expression and neighborhood identity.
Home to spectacular cultural celebrations: The annual Cinco de Mayo parade has run for over 54 years. In November, the Run of the Dead celebrates its 16th year in 2026, bringing a 5K and 10K race through the neighborhood's historic cemeteries alongside traditional face paint, ofrendas, and a youth arts fundraiser.
