Outer Drive-Hayes

Outer Drive-Hayes is located on the east side of Detroit featuring beautiful, quaint brick bungalows that are built to last and neighbors who know each other, and a new vision for a business corridor is taking shape.

Architecture you cannot manufacture: Street after street of well-built 1940s and 1950s brick bungalows, Tudor cottages, and two-story Colonials are designed to outlast every trend.
One of metro Detroit's most beloved concert venues is right here: Harpo's Concert Theatre, a stunning Art Moderne landmark at 14238 Harper Avenue that has been open since 1939, still hosts national acts year-round in one of the region's most iconic mid-size music spaces.
The road was built to be enjoyed: Outer Drive was first proposed in 1918 as a grand pleasure drive meant to encircle Detroit like a necklace. More boulevard than thoroughfare, the tree-lined, wandering roadway still delivers that unhurried character today.

History

Outer Drive itself was first established in 1918 as a grand pleasure boulevard meant to lie like a necklace around Detroit. It was designed as a scenic parkway eight miles from the city's center that wound through Detroit's most desirable residential addresses. By the 1940s and 1950s, the neighborhoods hugging East Outer Drive had filled in with the brick homes of professionals, elected and appointed officials, autoworkers, municipal employees who wanted space and stability. Motown's biggest names soon followed, turning the corridor into a quiet cultural landmark filled with timeless architecture, active block clubs, and an abundance of community pride.
