NW Goldberg

NW Goldberg is the historical Northend neighborhood where Detroit's musical legacy, creative energy, and community leadership come together. Home to the Motown Museum, innovative local businesses, and resident-led investment, NW Goldberg continues to build on a strong foundation for the future.

Hitsville U.S.A. is getting a $75 million upgrade right now: The historic Motown Museum, where legends like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackon, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations recorded history, is expanding by adding a new 40,000-square-foot "Motown Experience" that will include a theater, recording studio, retail space and a cafe opening in spring 2027.
Housed in a repurposed historic automotive factory: Dreamtroit is a vibrant mixed-use community blending affordable live/work spaces, artist studios, and dynamic event venues.
Operating out of Detroit’s NW Goldberg neighborhood: Rebel Nell transforms reclaimed local graffiti into handcrafted jewelry. The Hour Detroit-honored enterprise hires women exiting shelter care—providing living wages that have guided 49 women to housing stability and financial autonomy.

Housing

The Northend neighborhood consists of the historical Boston-Edison where you can visit Motown Founder Berry Gordy’s home and LaSalle Gardens showcase Detroit’s architectural legacy with historic single-family homes, classic brick duplexes, and multi-family residences set along lush, tree-lined streets. Ongoing preservation efforts and modern residential developments continue to be priority of the area, balancing historic character with forward-looking housing growth.

Community

At the heart of the neighborhood’s revitalization is NW Goldberg Cares, a community development corporation leading local garden programming, business support, and block cleanups. The non-profit is sustained in part by founder Daniel Washington’s artisanal cookie company, Detroit Dough. Together with neighborhood anchors and local favorites—from Marble Bar’s patio events, collabing with Sephia Coffee to Michigan & Trumbull’s pizza window—residents and partners are actively building a cohesive, culture-rich community.

History

NW Goldberg's most famous chapter began in 1959 when a 30-year-old former auto assembly line worker named Berry Gordy borrowed $800 from his family to purchase a property on West Grand Boulevard, founding the global cultural phenomenon of Motown Records. For decades, the neighborhood thrived as a bustling middle-class community of Boston-Edison anchored by churches, family-owned shops, and deep civic bonds.
