Lafayette Park

Lafayette Park is home to the world's largest collection of buildings by world-renowned architect Mies van der Rohe, who is often credited as one of the pioneers of modern architecture. This neighborhood is wrapped around 13 acres of car-free parkland and located just steps from Eastern Market, the Detroit Riverfront, and downtown.

Living inside a modernist masterpiece: Lafayette Park's 78 acres constitute the single largest collection of Mies van der Rohe buildings anywhere in the world. The district features 186 townhomes, courtyard houses, and high-rise apartments built between 1955 and 1963 using his signature exposed steel, tinted glass, and floor-to-ceiling windows.
A car-free urban oasis by design: Traffic is intentionally separated from residential life. Landscape architect Alfred Caldwell dropped all roadways and parking lots below grade, weaving the entire district together with a 13-acre green pedestrian parkland called The Plaisance. When residents step outside their doors, they walk directly into a park rather than a parking lot.
A community invested in its future: Residents play an active role in preserving Lafayette Park's character, advocating for thoughtful planning and long-term stewardship of the neighborhood.

History

The land that became Lafayette Park was originally the site of Black Bottom, one of Detroit's most vibrant African American communities. Black Bottom was a dense neighborhood of nearly 100,000 Black residents, home to hundreds of Black-owned businesses, jazz clubs, and churches. During the 1950s, the neighborhood was demolished as part of a federal urban renewal program to make way for the Chrysler Freeway and the new residential development that became Lafayette Park, displacing the vast majority of Black Bottom residents. Today, the neighborhood acknowledges its complex history through living community archive sharing and preserving Black Detroit stories⁣ spearheaded by Black Bottom Archives.
