East Side (District 4)

Located within District 4, this area represents Detroit's east side at its best: a collection of tree-lined neighborhoods with unbeatable architecture, a Detroit River waterfront threading with secret canals, and a community that has been driving local progress for generations.

Detroit's only canal neighborhood: the Far East Side is home to Harbor Island, Klenk Island, and Fox Creek, a network of historic waterways carved for small boats and utilized by Prohibition-era bootleggers. Today, residents use the canals for kayaking, fishing, and boating right out of their backyards, earning the area the nickname "Detroit's Venice."
Architecture worth the drive alone: From the stunning English Colonials and Tudor cottages of East English Village, celebrated for its English-themed street names like Yorkshire and Kensington, to the craftsman bungalows along Burns Avenue, the Far East Side boasts some of the most beautiful residential streetscapes in the city.
A brand-new fieldhouse in the middle of it all: The $14 million Chandler Park Fieldhouse, an indoor sports dome funded by the American Rescue Plan, opened in 2025 inside a 200-acre park that already features an 18-hole golf course, an aquatic center, and a skate park.

Housing

The Far East Side is an area where historic English Colonials and brick Tudors sit beneath a thick tree canopy, showcasing intricate stonework that makes every block a head-turner. Moving down toward the waterfront in Jefferson Chalmers, property options expand from quaint bungalows to fully restored canal-side estates with private docks. This exceptionally wide price range ensures a viable entry point for all home buyers.

Community

The community fabric here is sustained by neighborhood organizations with decades of staying power. Jefferson East, Inc. (JEI) has supported local homeowners, small businesses, and commercial development since 1994, while the Morningside Community Organization hosts consistent monthly meetings and lively annual block parties. Adding to the neighborhood's family resources, Brilliant Detroit operates dedicated hubs in both East English Village and Morningside, organizing everything from community dinners and improv workshops to their signature autumn book giveaways.

History

The Far East Side’s residential pockets grew rapidly during Detroit's first industrial era in the early to mid 20th century. These neighborhoods were custom-built for autoworkers, city employees, and professionals seeking stability and space just outside the city core. Jefferson Chalmers holds an especially colorful history: its quiet canals served as active smuggling routes for bootleggers during the 1920s. The families who have called the Far East Side home over the long-term have successfully preserved the civic backbone that is now welcoming a new generation of neighbors.
