Downtown

Downtown Detroit is a walkable, skyscraper-lined square mile packed with three professional sports stadiums, USA TODAY’s Best No. 1-ranked Riverwalk, the nation’s second-largest theater district with more than 13,000 seats, and thousands of neighbors who live, work, and play in the heart of the city.

Three major sports stadiums, all within walking distance of each other: Comerica Park (Tigers), Ford Field (Lions), and Little Caesars Arena (Pistons & Red Wings) sit blocks apart downtown, allowing residents to easily walk to a game any day of the week.
The second-largest theater district in the United States: Over 13,000 seats across the Fox, Fillmore, Gem, and Detroit Opera House, make Downtown one of the country’s premier destinations for live entertainment.
Live right where global industry happens: Downtown hosts Fortune 500 headquarters, tech innovators, and major employers like Rocket, General Motors, Ally, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, DTE Energy, Accenture, LinkedIn, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Here, living close to career opportunities is an everyday reality.

Housing

Downtown housing features custom mid- and high-rise apartments and condos carved out of historic skyscrapers. Converted office towers, restored Art Deco structures, and modern glass high-rises make up the residential market, where rental occupancy holds strong around 97%. Neighbors describe living downtown as exceptionally walkable, placing the Riverwalk, Dequindre Cut, and Campus Martius just minutes away on foot.

Community

Downtown community life thrives on proximity, density, thriving local and national businesses, and shared experiences. Residents build meaningful connections with neighbors who choose this central, urban lifestyle. That sense of connection shows up every day through building relationships, casual meetings in local parks, and a shared passion for game days, festivals, and new neighborhood dining spots. It is a welcoming community where people actively choose to make the heart of Detroit home.

History

Downtown Detroit's grid traces back to 1805, when Augustus B. Woodward designed a radial street plan inspired by Paris after a fire destroyed the original settlement, earning Detroit the nickname "Paris of the West." That plan, centered on Grand Circus Park, still shapes how you navigate the neighborhood today. The 20th century brought a building boom of architecturally significant skyscrapers like the Guardian Building and the Penobscot. Developments like Hudson's, now home to General Motors’ world headquarters, and Little Caesars Arena have reinforced Downtown as a core pillar of Detroit's modern growth.
