Cody Rouge

Cody Rouge is Detroit's great outdoor neighborhood, home to Michigan's largest urban park, a seven-acre Black-owned organic farm, a community organizing since 2009, and 37,000 residents who call it home.

Michigan's largest urban park is right in your backyard: Rouge Park's 1,184 acres, which is larger than Central Park, offers six miles of paved paths, nature trails, two Olympic pools, an 18-hole golf course, mountain biking, archery, a campground, and the Buffalo Soldiers Heritage Association's living horse museum.
The neighborhood's own organic farm is grown by and for the community: D-Town Farm, a seven-acre certified organic operation inside Rouge Park run by the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, grows over 30 varieties of fruits, vegetables, and herbs using sustainable practices. Volunteers, school groups, and community members who want to reconnect with where their food comes from are always welcome.
The area features the most youth-centered neighborhood planning process in Detroit: When Cody Rouge created its Neighborhood Framework, residents put young people at the center. This approach resulted in a youth-centric plan that has already delivered over $15 million in completed projects.

Housing

Cody Rouge offers solid brick bungalows, Colonial-style homes, and well-proportioned two-flats on wide lots with mature trees.

Community

Community organizing has been central to Cody Rouge for more than 15 years. The Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance (CRCAA) runs a weekly youth council, summer employment programs for teens, intergenerational wellness events, an annual Family Fun Day, a Back-to-School Rally, and block club coordination. Brilliant Detroit's Cody Rouge Hub, which was the very first Brilliant Detroit location ever opened, offers early childhood programs for families with children ages 0 to 8.

History

Cody Rouge was built in the early-to-mid 20th century as a "village in the city" serving families of the Ford River Rouge Plant, which was once the largest industrial complex in the world. Today, the CRCAA, Friends of Rouge Park, Don Bosco, Brilliant Detroit, and dozens of block clubs strengthen neighborhood connection through local programs, community partnerships, and resident leadership.

Mary’s Grill

A classic Detroit diner on Grand River that has been feeding the west side for decades. Started by Mary and her husband Skender after they immigrated from the former Yugoslavia, they built the kind of neighborhood spot where breakfast is served all day, burgers come out hot and messy, and the staff treats regulars like extended family.
