Boston-Edison

Boston-Edison is a magnificent Detroit neighborhood: 900 historic mansions built on four tree-lined boulevards, supported by a century-old community association and a resident list that reads like a VIP list. Henry Ford, Joe Louis, Berry Gordy, the Fisher brothers, and Smokey Robinson have all called these blocks home.

One of the largest residential historic districts in the United States: The Boston-Edison Historic District spans 36 blocks of Tudor Revival, Colonial, Georgian, and Craftsman mansions built between 1905 and 1925 for Detroit's auto industry elite. It was designated as a National Historic Site in 1973 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
A celebrated coffee shop inside a converted church: The Congregation operates out of a beautifully restored 1920s church on the neighborhood's edge. Serving espresso by day and cocktails by night while hosting weekly DJs, food trucks, and community events.
The oldest continuously running neighborhood association in Detroit: The Historic Boston-Edison Association, founded in 1921, still runs monthly meetings, annual garden tours, summer attic sales, a house concert series, and a Holiday Home Tour that has sold out for over five consecutive decades.

Housing

Boston-Edison's homes are one of a kind. The neighborhood features brick mansions, built with materials and craftsmanship that are impossible to duplicate today. Most homes range from 3,000 to over 8,000 square feet, showcasing Colonial Revival, Georgian, Tudor, Craftsman, and Dutch Colonial styles. Lots are wide enough to accommodate carriage houses, formal gardens, and sweeping side drives. The Historic Boston-Edison Association maintains an active zoning and beautification committee, and monitors historic code compliance to preserve the neighborhood's historic integrity.

Community

The Historic Boston-Edison Association is an active, vital force in the neighborhood. The association organizes major community staples including the annual Holiday Home Tour, Summer Attic Sale, and the Sounds of Music House Concert Series. This strong civic infrastructure is a major reason why families continue to choose Boston-Edison, creating a close environment where neighbors are deeply invested in their community.

History

Boston-Edison's story began in 1891 when the first section between Woodward and Hamilton was annexed into the City of Detroit. Development continued in waves through 1925, funded by the explosive wealth of the auto industry. Henry Ford, Sebastian Kresge, Horace Rackham, and four of the seven Fisher brothers all built homes here. Following a mid-20th century demographic shift, the neighborhood became a proud, predominantly Black community. Notably free of the restrictive racial covenants that impacted other local historic districts, its residents established a legacy of architectural preservation and civic leadership that continues to define the neighborhood today.
