Risonna Perkins is a proud Detroit native, author, and creator of the Detroit-based Meet The Buzzbees, an educational brand and book series inspired by her passion for bumblebees, literacy, and learning. She is also the founder of Ready to Read with Rimel, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting literacy, and a passionate advocate for cancer awareness and community health. Through her books, nonprofit, and community involvement, Risonna is committed to inspiring young readers, empowering families, and creating meaningful change in the Detroit community.
Investing in Detroit: Risonna is a proud Detroit native who owns and is actively renovating three properties in Little Village, investing directly in the revitalization of her community. Risonna is preparing to launch a weekly Family Literacy Night in November 2026, creating a welcoming space where families can come together to read, learn, and build a stronger love for literacy. As a proud third-generation Detroiter, Risonna is deeply committed to bringing cancer awareness and education to her community. After losing her mother, grandmother, and aunt to cancer, she turned her personal experience into a passion for advocacy, working to encourage awareness, prevention, and access to resources throughout Detroit.
East Village & Little Village
I think Little Village is a clever misconception about a big movement happening in the city. Little Village is where the artists thrive and create in our city! It’s the perfect place for an elegant date night at Sinbad’s on the water, but still a cool place to chill at our state-of-the-art skatepark, co-designed by Tony Hawk. It’s an awesome place to purchase a home and manifest your happy place. And who wouldn’t want to live less than a mile away from the most beautiful riverfront ever! Little Village is a place where you can live, create, explore, and enjoy everything that makes Detroit special.
